Faking It: Workplace Implications of the Impostor Phenomenon
While there continues to be a raft of social media myth presenting ‘fake news’ about the ‘imposter syndrome’, this workshop identifies what the impostor phenomenon (IP) is, what it is not (spoiler—it’s not a syndrome!) and provides an overview of how it might manifest itself in the digital infrastructure workplace.
This session is perfect for individuals who may be looking to leverage latent potential or diminish anxiety about their capabilities. The session is also useful for leaders and managers who might not fully understand why talented people are be performing below their capabilities and how this construct is associated with psycho-social risk.
Learning objectives:
- Gain clarity about what the IP is (and what it is not) and how it is manifested in behaviour and thought habits in the self and others (particularly useful for people in leadership roles).
- Identify the broad implications of the IP on the individual and those around them (personally and professionally) by looking briefly at the cyclical nature of IP experiences.
- Identify workplace and governance implications (e.g., productivity issues, psycho-social risk, performance deficits and talent management).
- Briefly explore ways of diminishing IP experiences in the workplace.
