Mark Monroe

Mark Monroe is a Principle Engineer in the Datacenter Advanced Development Group at Microsoft, working on issues in energy and water conservation. His 30+ years’ of technical and business experience in the IT industry spans many layers of the stack from data center design and operations, IT operations, application and system design, as well as professional services, sales, program management, and outsourcing management.
Mark worked for more than 17 years at Sun Microsystems in numerous leadership and executive roles including the Director of Sustainable Computing, leading the company to attain no. 14 in Newsweek’s “Green 500” awards. During his tenure, he also served as a founding board member of The Green Grid, an IT industry consortium focused on resource efficient data centers and business computing environments.
After Sun, Mark served as the Executive Director of The Green Grid, leading the publication of 20 technical papers and on-line tools in one year, and expanding membership and global reach including the first chapter in China.
He continues to work on sustainability advisory boards with the University of Colorado and local Colorado governments. Mark has a BS and MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt and Master Black Belt.
